Australia announced recently that it will cap international student enrollments at 270,000 for 2025. This decision aims to address record migration levels that have significantly driven up home rental prices across the country. The cap is part of a broader strategy to manage the impacts of high migration, following a series of measures implemented since last year to phase out COVID-era concessions for foreign students and workers. These concessions were initially introduced to assist local businesses facing workforce shortages while strict border controls prevented overseas workers from entering.

In addition to the enrollment cap, the Australian government has also increased the visa fee for foreign students more than twofold and closed loopholes that previously allowed students to extend their stays indefinitely. This approach reflects the government’s commitment to balancing the needs of its education sector with the challenges posed by rapid population growth and housing affordability.

Prospective international students should be aware of these developments when considering their study plans in Australia, as these changes may impact their opportunities and costs in the coming years.
